Backos Engineering designs and builds quality pumping systems as an alternative to conventional pumps and motors.  Sanford Backos P.E., president, is a registered professional engineer with over 30 years experience in boiler steam and condensate return applications.  He originally designed these systems as an alternative to conventional condensate pumps because of a need in industrial plants to reduce maintenance and save energy.  Units are custom engineered and manufactured at our fabrication facility in New Boston, Michigan. 

Conventional condensate pumps may be rated for high temperatures, but because of the drop in pressure on the suction side of the pump, flashing and cavitation can occur on impellers and seals causing leaks and loss of prime.  The only solution is to let the condensate cool to the point of where flashing does not occur, often times a large receiver is required for more volume to create greater suction head pressures. 

Since there are no impellers and seals, Backos Pumpless Pumps are unaffected by high temperature and flashing conditions.  Condensate may be returned to the boiler at higher temperatures.  As a rule of thumb, every 30 degree increase in condensate return will result in a 1% reduction in fuel use. 

Although primary applications are for steam condensate return, systems have been used successfully in sludge, slurry, and caustic waste transfer where leaks could cause harm to the environment.  Many solvents, because of their unstable nature and low flash points are ideally suited for handling by the Backos Pumpless Pump as well.
